The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Image result for the 7 habits of highly effective people by stephen covey
Habits 1: Be Proactive
"Habits is the key to unlocking all the other habits and that's why it comes first. It says , "I am the captain of my life . I can choose my attitude . I'm responsible for my own happiness or unhappiness . I am in the driver's seat of my density , not just a passenger."

Posted by Mr. Haymore

Habit 1: Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life
. You can't keep blaming everything on your parents or grandparents. Proactive people recognize that they are "response-able." They don't blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior. Reactive people, on the other hand, are often affected by their physical environment. They find external sources to blame for their behavior. If the weather is good, they feel good. If it isn't, it affects their attitude and performance, and they blame the weather. All of these external forces act as stimuli that we respond to. Between the stimulus and the response is your greatest power--you have the freedom to choose your response. One of the most important things you choose is what you say. Your language is a good indicator of how you see yourself. A proactive person uses proactive language--I can, I will, I prefer, etc. A reactive person uses reactive language--I can't, I have to, if only. Reactive people believe they are not responsible for what they say and do--they have no choice.

Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind
"Control your own destiny or someone else will."(Jack Welch) "When you know where you intended to end up , you know where you are now."

Habit 2 is based on imagination--the ability to envision in your mind what you cannot at present see with your eyes. It is based on the principle that all things are created twice. There is a mental (first) creation, and a physical (second) creation. The physical creation follows the mental, just as a building follows a blueprint. If you don't make a conscious effort to visualize who you are and what you want in life, then you empower other people and circumstances to shape you and your life by default. It's about connecting again with your own uniqueness and then defining the personal, moral, and ethical guidelines within which you can most happily express and fulfill yourself. Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.
Habit 3: Put First Thing First
"Organize and execute around priorities."
Habit 3 is about life management as well–your purpose, values, roles, and priorities. What are “first things?” First things are those things you, personally, find of most worth. If you put first things first, you are organizing and managing time and events according to the personal priorities you established in Habit 2.”The instructors were saying “Look at all those things that matter in your life – or that part of your life that is your work. Major projects. That potentially paradigm-shifting research on earthquake prediction. The restoration of 30 square miles of underwater habitat. The buyout and tear down of floodplain housing in your city and the establishment of a riverfront park. Writing that book. Learning that second language…
Habit 4:Think Win-Win Think Win-Win isn't about being nice, nor is it a quick-fix technique. It is a character-based code for human interaction and collaboration.

Most of us learn to base our self-worth on comparisons and competition. We think about succeeding in terms of someone else failing--that is, if I win, you lose; or if you win, I lose. Life becomes a zero-sum game. There is only so much pie to go around, and if you get a big piece, there is less for me; it's not fair, and I'm going to make sure you don't get anymore. We all play the game, but how much fun is it really?

Win-win sees life as a cooperative arena, not a competitive one. Win-win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. Win-win means agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying. We both get to eat the pie, and it tastes pretty darn good!

Habit 5:Seek First to Understand, then to be understood
"Diagnose before you prescribe"
If you're like most people, you probably seek first to be understood; you want to get your point across. And in doing so, you may ignore the other person completely, pretend that you're listening, selectively hear only certain parts of the conversation or attentively focus on only the words being said, but miss the meaning entirely. So why does this happen? Because most people listen with the intent to reply, not to understand. You listen to yourself as you prepare in your mind what you are going to say, the questions you are going to ask, etc. You filter everything you hear through your life experiences, your frame of reference. You check what you hear against your autobiography and see how it measures up. And consequently, you decide prematurely what the other person means before he/she finishes communicating. Do any of the following sound familiar?

"Oh, I know just how you feel. I felt the same way." "I had that same thing happen to me." "Let me tell you what I did in a similar situation."

Habit 6: Synergize
"The whole is greater than the sum of its parts

To put it simply, synergy means "two heads are better than one." Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. But it doesn't just happen on its own. It's a process, and through that process, people bring all their personal experience and expertise to the table. Together, they can produce far better results that they could individually. Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. One plus one equals three, or six, or sixty--you name it.

When people begin to interact together genuinely, and they're open to each other's influence, they begin to gain new insight. The capability of inventing new approaches is increased exponentially because of differences.

Habit 7: Sharpen the saw
The four Dimension of self-Renewal:Physical, Mental, Spiritual , social/emotional

As you renew yourself in each of the four areas, you create growth and change in your life. Sharpen the Saw keeps you fresh so you can continue to practice the other six habits. You increase your capacity to produce and handle the challenges around you. Without this renewal, the body becomes weak, the mind mechanical, the emotions raw, the spirit insensitive, and the person selfish. Not a pretty picture, is it?

Feeling good doesn't just happen. Living a life in balance means taking the necessary time to renew yourself. It's all up to you. You can renew yourself through relaxation. Or you can totally burn yourself out by overdoing everything. You can pamper yourself mentally and spiritually. Or you can go through life oblivious to your well-being. You can experience vibrant energy. Or you can procrastinate and miss out on the benefits of good health and exercise. You can revitalize yourself and face a new day in peace and harmony. Or you can wake up in the morning full of apathy because your get-up-and-go has got-up-and-gone. Just remember that every day provides a new opportunity for renewal--a new opportunity to recharge yourself

Reflection:Learning just 7 habits to become more effective seemed like just the quick fix I was looking for back then. I figured I could learn a few more habits, after all the habits I was trying to break I don’t remember trying to learn in the first place.  When I completed reading his book, I recall feeling a new found sense of order in how to approach life and work.
I have followed Stephen Covey work over the years and have implemented his teaching in how I approach leading an organization and the consulting services we provide to universities evaluating their campus housing programs. I decided after reading of Stephen Covey death I would read his book again and see if there was something I missed the first time or if age and experience allowed a different lesson to come through.

How to Win friends and influence People

Six Ways to Make people Like you . If you want people to like you ........
1. Become genuinely interested in others
As always – we start with the WHY?! The reason we ask this question is quite simple – what is the purpose of becoming genuinely interested in other people? Is it know them as a friend, is it to know more about life itself? Is it to understand different people and connect to them? Is it to ask that person out on a date? Or are you trying to know more about people cos you really like knowing?
Try and answer this why cos it gives us a better clarity to approach the situation.

2.Smile
1. "Action speaker louder than words, and smile says, "I like you. You make me happy. I am glad to see you"
2. "You don't feel like smiling ? Then force yourself to smile."
3."It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business, and is the countersign (witness or indication )of friends
This second way to make people like you is very special gesture that should be use on a every day use.Nobody needs a smile so much as the one who has none to give. So get used to smiling heart-warming smiles, and you will spread sunshine in a sometimes dreary world.

Rule 3: Remember names
1) "A man's name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language ."
1) "If you don't remember names , you are headed for trouble."
These are some ways you can try to remember a person name Repeat, Repeat, Repeat. The most surefire strategy is to repeat the person’s name–both in your head, and out loud–as soon as possible after you’ve been introduced. Occasionally use the person’s name in conversation. “Pleasure to meet you, Bob,” or “Bob, so good to see you.” Don’t overdo it, of course, but don’t worry that Bob will recoil, either. He’d rather you remember his name than not.
Find The Trigger. Try to associate names with things people tell you about themselves (careers, hobbies) that will trigger the sound or association of the name in your mind. Fred likes to fish, Margarita runs a bar–you get the idea. “You have to search in the moment for something familiar,” says Spiegel. “It’s a simple trick, but it just sticks.”

Rule4: Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
1)"If you aspire to be a good conversationalist, be an attentive listener."
2)"Remember that the man you are talking to is a hundred times more interested in himself and his wants and his problems than he is in you and your problems."

Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves means to pay attention to others conversations. When you talk to someone you want them to pay attention to you so you should do the same. You wouldn't want to talk to someone and it looks like your talking to a wall because they are not listening. It is disrespectful when you are somewhere else when someone is talking to you. If you don’t pay attention that person will lose interest because they will think they are wasting their time since you are not listening. For example if you are talking to your friend but also texting. You should put your phone away and turn it off if you want so you can pay full attention and not ask later to repeat it.

Rule 5: Talk in terms of the other man;s interest

"The royal road to a man's heart is to talk to him about the things he treasures most."

What this means is that when you talk to someone you should talk to them about what they want to achieve in life. Such as what their plans are for their future, what their goals are in life, what or who they care about the most, and who knows you'll probably find some things in common. Once you figure out or they tell you what they care the most about you should feel sensitive to their response because sometimes it's not easy for a man to tell you their deepest secrets such as what or who they care about the most. Trying to make a connection with someone at first may seem a bit difficult cause they're not responding or because it just gets awkward. It gets easier the more you try to talk to someone though. This makes men sometimes vulnerable because they just told you something thats very important to them and like i said some find it hard to talk about themselves or their families. I guess in a way it makes them soft because they don't have to act all that anymore since you got to know them personally.

Rule 6: Make the other person feel important--and do it sincerely.

"The desire to be important is the deepest urge in human nature." (John Dewey)"Helping people feel important and appreciated works magic.

Don’t you enjoy it when people treat you like you’re important? It can be humbling at times but I know I enjoy it and I bet you do too. If we enjoy it then why not spread the joy and allow others to feel the same way? Here are a few simple things anyone can do to convey a sense of importance to another person:
Show respect – Respect comes easily through good manners with phrases like, “Yes please,” “No thank you,” “Excuse me” and “Please forgive me.” These are simple and none assumes anything from the other person.
Use their name – As I shared in the article a rose by any other name , the sweetest sound to any person is the sound of their own name. People feel important when identified by name because it humanizes them.
Golden Rule – Treat people the way you’d like to be treated or the way you’d like someone to treat a loved one. This kind of behavior tends to come back to you. Earl Hickey calls it karma.
Fine Reputation – We will explore Carnegie’s advice to give the other person a fine reputation to live up to later in this series. For now know this; conveying belief in another person can help them achieve more than they thought possible and make them feel more important than ever before. Give that gift.
We make requests of people every single day because we need other people. Recognizing that fact, this blog is intended to help you learn to hear “Yes!” The more friends you make, the easier it is to influence people and hear “Yes!” But it’s not just about getting what you want. It’s about building relationships and enjoying our lives more because of those relationships. Make another person feel important today and that’s one step in the right direction them and for you.

UCLA
1.University of California, Los Angeles
2.UCLA Requirements for Admission

What are UCLA's admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:
GPA requirements
Testing requirements, including SAT and ACT requirements
Application requirements
In this guide we'll cover what you need to get into UCLA and build a strong application.
School location: Los Angeles, CA
This school is also known as: UCLA, UC Los Angeles, University of California, Los Angeles

Admissions Rate: 20%
If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.
The acceptance rate at UCLA is 20%. For every 100 applicants, 20 are admitted.

This means the school is very selective. If you meet UCLA's requirements for GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and other components of the application, you have a great shot at getting in. But if you fall short on GPA or your SAT/ACT scores, you'll have a very low chance of being admitted, even if you meet the other admissions requirements.

UCLA GPA Requirements
Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.
The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.
Average GPA: 4.29
The average GPA at UCLA is 4.29.

Peak Performance Principles
"The Six Attitudes of High  Achievers"
Image result for john R noe
John R. Noe
1.Make no small plans

Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men`s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever- growing insistence. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us.. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty.“Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistence.”
2.Do what they fear
We fear many bad things: Crime, auto accidents, devastating storms, West Nile virus, chemical weapons, mass murderers, terrorists, earthquakes, demons and Satan himself!I often hear people explain the fear of the Lord as a mere respect or reverence. But the Bible uses the word fear at least 300 times in reference to God, so we make a mistake when we downplay it. what I belive this quote means is , never fear waht others says about just strive for the infinint. a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid.

3.Are you willing to prepare
I truly believe that everything that we do and everyone that we meet is put in our path for a purpose. There are no accidents; we're all teachers - if we're willing to pay attention to the lessons we learn, trust our positive instincts and not be afraid to take risks or wait for some miracle to come knocking at our door. Marla Gibb.At the end of the day, life is hard for all of us (though to varying degrees), and there will be many obstacles to what we want from life. You might look at successful people and from the outside – it looks easy. You might think you’re putting in as much effort as anyone else. But the truth is that as humans, we often overestimate our own determination and underestimate the determination of those around us.
Image result for are you willing to prepare
4.Are you willing to risk failure
Obvious to some and seemingly contradictory to others, success is found by those who are willing to fail.    Even as history has seen countless examples of failure being a common prelude to success, it is often overlooked as people scramble for the perfect success formula.  Unsurprising, as failure is not glorious like a perfectly executed and foolproof plan.  When you actually fail at something, it isn’t fun.Avoiding Failure
Relationships – Simple.  Don’t start any.
Career – Follow well-established, proven paths.  It may not be your first choice, but hey…it will pay the bills.
Dreams – You won’t try, because a realization that you have failed to accomplish your dreams is terrifying (it is to me).  It’s as if you’re finding out you’re not good enough and are doomed to live in mediocrity.  You’d rather just leave this one untouched for now, and tackle it someday  when you’resure you can succeed."The biggest risk is not taking any risk... In a world that changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks. Mark Zuckerberg
Image result for are you willing to risk failure
5. Are teachable

"In this new year, may you have a deep understanding of your true value and worth, an absolute faith in your unlimited potential, peace of mind in the midst of uncertainty, the confidence to let go when you need to, acceptance to replace your resistance, gratitude to open your heart, the strength to meet your challenges, great love to replace your fear, forgiveness and compassion for those who offend you, clear sight to see your best and true path, hope to dispel obscurity, the conviction to make your dreams come true, meaningful and rewarding synchronicities, dear friends who truly know and love you, a childlike trust in the benevolence of the universe, the humility to remain teachable, the wisdom to fully embrace your life exactly as it is, the understanding that every soul has its own course to follow, the discernment to recognize your own unique inner voice of truth, and the courage to learn to be still." What this is trying to say is basically if you are a teachable can learn things fast or slow.
6. Have heart
How does having a heart help ? well being mos things should be toched by you heart to really feel what good from bad is.Like this quote states , The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart. Helen Keller. Put your heart, mind and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - whiant, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. Steve JobsYour time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. Steve Jobs

I will apply this to my every day life by always having a heart with others and nice and very respectful to my peers
